The other day I went with my friend to chase up the lady who had bought a TV from him. She owed him several hundred dollars. Her daughter answered the door.
My jaw dropped at the lies the daughter quickly spouted forth in defence of her mother. I stood there silently watching her, recalling a saying popular in Italy: "The truth always bubbles up to the surface". (It sounds beautiful in Italian).
I wanted to say to the daughter in a quiet voice, "The Bible says "Thou shalt not lie". But I didn't say anything.
